How can I set up my iPhone to use with AT&T’s ‘Pay-As-You-Go’? (Technologically Experienced User)? I have tried everything UNDER THE SUN and it does not work; ‘blacksnow’, ‘redsnow’, ‘sn0w’, ‘blackra1n’, ‘ZiPhone’,… but to no prevail. I am trying to get a newly activated pay as you go SIM card from a generic cheapo prepaid phone to work in my iPhone my cousin gave me (which has had its previous, deactivated SIM removed). I got the phone for a really good price, but I have no tolerance for AT&T’s stupendously-overpriced iPhone plans, so I have to figure this out. Is there something I could be doing wrong? Or is this simply nearly impossible?

Technical Info:

Carrier: AT&T 5.5
Modem Firmware: 05.11.07

As far as I know, this phone is currently jailbroken. But it does not seem to be unlocked, or perhaps it’s a problem with the type of SIM I am using, or the corresponding activation?

I have successfully used this SIM card in the prepaid phone all along, but when I put it in the iPhone, it says either: ‘waiting for activation; this could take some time’ (I have waited up to 1/2 hr), or in the top left corner, ‘No service’ (but AT&T and TMobile show up in the carriers list in settings). Sometimes it pops up a dialog that says something like ‘network no longer available’. I have tried calling numbers and also the *123*Zip Code*2# activation code. No success.
Jaunty: Thanks for the detailed response! Please answer this though:

So can I simply go to the store and buy a ‘Go-Phone’ package, and tell the sales clerk NOT to activate it in the cheap-o phone first, but instead to insert it into the iPhone and activate it there firsthand? This will circumvent this problem?

Thank you
